Cédric Tiberghien (piano)

Cédric Tiberghien is a French pianist who has established a truly international career. He has been particularly applauded for his versatility, as demonstrated by his wide-ranging repertoire, interesting programming, an openness to explore innovative concert formats and his dynamic chamber music partnerships.

Cédric studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Frédéric Aguessy and Gérard Frémy and was awarded the Premier Prix in 1992, aged just seventeen. He was then a prizewinner at several major international piano competitions (Bremen, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Geneva, Milan), culminating in the First Prize at the prestigious Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris in 1998, alongside five special awards, including the Audience Award and the Orchestra Award.

He has performed across five continents in some of the world’s most prestigious halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall and Barbican in London, the Salle Pleyel and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Berlin’s Bechstein Hall and Pierre Boulez Saal, Salzburg’s Mozarteum, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Sydney Opera and Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan and Asahi Halls.

He is a dedicated chamber musician, with regular partners including violinist Alina Ibragimova, violist Antoine Tamestit and baritone Stéphane Degout. He and Alina first met as members of the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme in 2005, and their long-standing partnership has featured highly successful recital series of both the complete Beethoven violin sonatas and Mozart’s sonatas for violin and keyboard. They have performed at major venues throughout Europe and North America, and have undertaken extensive tours to Australia and Asia. Their discography includes complete cycles of music by Schubert, Szymanowski and Ravel, and their recent survey of the Mozart sonatas was awarded the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

Cédric’s solo performances recently focused on the music of Bartók, culminating in a three-volume exploration of his solo piano works for Hyperion. He has also recorded late works by Liszt, the Chopin préludes, piano concertos by Dubois and solo piano music by Karol Szymanowski, including Masques, Métopes and two sets of études, earning four Diapasons d’Or.
