And, celebrating another of the year's musical anniversaries, Nicky Spence, Julius Drake and the Piatti Quartet present On Wenlock Edge & other songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams. This comprises authoritative performances of three of RVW's most powerful vocal works, including The house of Life and, with the participation of violist Timothy Ridout, the Four Hymns.
The ongoing series dedicated to choice selections of our all-time favourite recordings—ones you might possibly have missed? This time: Choral Music by Arvo Pärt from Polyphony and Stephen Layton (‘one of the most singularly beautiful recordings I've heard this year’—International Record Review), Music for the Court of Maximilian II from Cinquecento (‘this revelatory disc, beguilingly sung …’—Classic FM Magazine), and In a state of jazz from Marc-André Hamelin (‘it's hard to believe Hamelin didn't grow up within earshot of some dubious jazz haunt in New Orleans or Harlem’—International Record Review). If you don’t know them already, a track from each is included on our monthly sampler which is free to download.
The Sacred chants of Saint Hildegard of Bingen are a perfect showcase for the uniquely pure soprano tones of Grace Davidson: a solo voice weaving timeless charms. And a further, very different, new release from Signum Classics brings together nineteen tracks—many of them originally disseminated via social media—recorded during the fear-struck days which immediately preceded the lockdown of American society in 2020. The Covid-19 sessions is a second album on the label for the acclaimed US all-male vocal ensemble Cantus, and brings with it their trademark heart-on-sleeve performing style.
As a highlight of his inaugural season with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2017, Sir Simon Rattle dared to programme all three of the Stravinsky Ballets from a most radical few years of the composer's life: The Firebird with its famously demonic opening from 1910, the impish puppetry of Petrushka from 1911, and finally the carnal mechanics of The Rite of Spring from 1913. Now available on LSO Live, it's a thrilling ride.
A second collaboration between Irish National Opera and Signum Classics turns to perhaps the most famous of them all: Puccini's La bohème. Celine Byrne and Merūnas Vitulskis play the ill-fated lovers, the whole impressive cast under the musical direction of Sergio Alapont. 'I would encourage everyone to get hold of the recording when it becomes available' (Seen and Heard International).
