From 1990 he was Music Director at Den Norske Opera (Oslo), and during this period he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, San Francisco Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet, and Berlin Staatsoper. At the age of 32 he became Music Director of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, remaining in post for ten years. He has also worked extensively at the Metropolitan Opera, New York (debut in 1997—Eugene Onegin), and the Bayreuth Festspiele (debut in 1999—Lohengrin), and has conducted many of the world’s most-renowned orchestras.
Pappano’s extensive discography includes Verdi, Rossini, Wagner, and Puccini operas, orchestral music by Tchaikovsky and Respighi, and various concerto recordings with Leif Ove Andsnes, Maxim Vengerov, and Han-Na Chang. He has received many awards and honours, including the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera (2003), the RPS Music Award (2004), and the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce of the Republic of Italy, and was granted a Knighthood in the 2012 New Year Honours List.
