Music Director of the Teatro Regio Torino since 2007 his initiatives have propelled it on to the global stage. Under his leadership, it has recorded with leading singers of our time and toured all over the world. His productions there have included Salome, La traviata, Boris Godunov, and Massenet’s Thaïs.
Gianandrea is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic, Principal Conductor of the Orquestra de Cadaqués, and Conductor Laureate of the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester. In 1997 he became the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre, and he has been Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival since 2001. His long-standing relationship with the Metropolitan Opera, New York, dates back to 2002 with a production of Prokofiev’s War and Peace, and he has worked with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, and the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
An extensive discography of over 50 recordings includes discs for Chandos and Deutsche Grammophon, and he is closely involved with the next generation of musicians through his work with many youth orchestras. He holds the honour of Cavaliere Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.
