Connie Shih (piano)

Canadian pianist Connie Shih is considered to be one of Canada’s most outstanding artists. In 1994 she was awarded the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award for most outstanding classical artist under thirty. At the age of nine she made her orchestral debut, playing Mendelssohn’s first piano concerto with the Seattle Symphony. Three years later she became the youngest ever protégé of György Sebők, before continuing her studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Claude Frank, himself once a student of Artur Schnabel. Later studies were undertaken with Fou Ts’ong in London.

As a soloist Connie has appeared extensively with orchestras throughout Canada, the US and Europe. In solo recital settings she has made countless appearances in Canada, the US, Iceland, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Japan and China. She has given chamber music performances with many world-renowned musicians, and appears regularly in concert worldwide with her cellist duo partner Steven Isserlis. In chamber settings she performs at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Hall, and the Bath Music, Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Verbier, Lucerne and Kronberg festivals. Her musical collaborators have included Sir Simon Keenlyside, Joshua Bell, Maxim Vengerov, Tabea Zimmermann, Manuel Fischer-Dieskau and Isabelle Faust.

With cellist Manuel Fischer-Dieskau she recorded the first-ever album of Carl Reinecke’s cello sonatas, as well as the complete Beethoven cello sonatas. In 2017 Connie released the first of two albums with Steven Isserlis on the BIS label.

Connie’s performances are frequently broadcast via television and radio on CBC (Canada), the BBC (UK), and SWR, NDR and WDR (Germany), as well as on other stations across North America, Asia and Europe.

Connie was adjunct faculty at the Hochschule für Musik Mainz—a position she currently holds at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. In addition, she has given masterclasses at renowned music institutions and was on the faculty at the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy.
