It's now sixteen years since Angela Hewitt embarked on a new series which this month reaches its glorious conclusion with Beethoven Piano Sonatas Opp 106 & 111. What more appropriate final chapter could there be than the pairing of Beethoven's last sonata with an equally inspirational interpretation of the 'Hammerklavier'? As we predicted at the outset, this has indeed become a very important series of recordings.
The ongoing series dedicated to choice selections of our all-time favourite recordings—ones you might possibly have missed? This time: The Rachmaninov Transcriptions from Howard Shelley (‘a true keyboard aristocrat’—Gramophone), Violin Concertos by Charles Stanford from Anthony Marwood, the BBC Scottish and Martyn Brabbins (‘the kind of playing that one can listen to for pleasure simply because of its ravishing, jewel-like tonal quality … an outstanding release’—International Record Review), and Voyage à Paris – The mélodies of Francis Poulenc from Dame Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson (‘this record will enchant you’—Hi-Fi News). If you don’t know them already, a track from each is included on our monthly sampler which is free to download.
The viols of Fretwork have recorded The Flat Consort by Matthew Locke for Signum. There are five suites in the collection, fantasias and dances intricately woven together into minor miracles of intimate chamber music. Rich bass continuo comes from the archlute and theorbo of David Miller and the harpsichord of Silas Wollston.
New albums on Signum Classics bring us Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin in a new recording by star countertenor Iestyn Davies and pianist Joseph Middleton, and, from the Houston Chamber Choir, Circlesong by Bob Chilcott. With important contributions from the Treble Choir of Houston, the composer describes the work as 'a life-cycle piece based on First Nations poetry from North America'.
Newly re-issued on the Cala Signum label we have Stokowski Philadelphia rarities. Set down between 1928 and 1940, this collection captures the Philadelphia Orchestra during a golden age of landmark recordings, focusing on the more remote musical byways explored by conductor Leopold Stokowski with many works not previously—or subsequently—recorded anywhere else.
