Abendbilder was composed during the two months before Wolf’s seventeenth birthday in March 1877. During the next two months he tackled An ***, an outspoken and pain-filled love poem. Here we find Wolf experimenting with a more direct emotional utterance. Both the pianistic gestures and the vocal lines suggest less a German Lied than a Tchaikovsky romance.
