Grave – Larghetto – Allegro con fuoco, based on verses 1–3, 6 and 7:
O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
Arise, thou Judge of the world: and reward the proud after deserving.
Lord, how long shall the ungodly triumph?
They murder the widow, and the stranger: and put the fatherless to death.
And yet they say the Lord shall not see: neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.
Adagio, based on verses 17 and 19:
If the Lord had not helped me: it had not failed but my soul had been put to silence.
In the multitude of sorrows that I had in my heart: thy comforts have refreshed my soul.
Fugue: Allegro, based on verses 22 and 23:
But the Lord is my refuge: and my God is the strength of confidence.
He shall recompense them their wickedness, and destroy them in their own malice.
Reubke conceived the work for a large organ with at least three manuals, and one of its most important elements is his use of the range of colours available from such an instrument. But Reubke’s music works extremely well in the piano transcription made by August Stradal (1860–1930). Stradal studied the piano with Theodor Leschetizky and composition with Anton Bruckner, before completing his piano studies with Liszt in 1884. He made a speciality of transcriptions and arrangements, including numerous pieces by Bach and Wagner, and ambitious projects such as Liszt’s Faust Symphony, Mahler’s Symphony No 5 and most of Bruckner’s symphonies. His transcriptions are often uncompromising in their demands, and Stradal is particularly deft at reimagining the music in convincingly pianistic terms. Such is the case with Reubke’s Sonata on the 94th Psalm. First published by Cotta in 1925, Stradal’s piano version is at its most persuasive in the fugue.
