Robert Murray (tenor)

Robert Murray has performed principal roles with the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), Hamburg State Opera, the English, Welsh and Bergen national operas and Norwegian Opera, and at the Beijing Music, Venice Biennale, Edinburgh and Salzburg festivals. He made his debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Stefan Herheim’s production of Peter Grimes, and at the Teatro alla Scala in Adès’s The Tempest. Recent opera engagements include Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw) for the ENO, Josef K in Gottfried von Einem’s Der Prozeß for the Theater an der Wien, the title role in Mozart’s Mitridate for Hamburg State Opera, and Florestan (Fidelio) for Northern Irish Opera.

Murray has appeared in concert with the LSO, LPO, Philharmonia, CBSO, AAM, English Concert, OAE, Handel & Haydn Society and the BBC Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony, RTVE Symphony, Mahler Chamber, Minnesota, Boston Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony orchestras, as well as at the BBC Proms, performing with Edward Gardner, Harry Christophers, Martyn Brabbins, Paul McCreesh, Harry Bicket and Sir Simon Rattle.

In recital, Murray has performed with Andrew West, James Baillieu, Graham Johnson, Joseph Middleton, Iain Burnside and Malcolm Martineau at the Aldeburgh, Brighton and Oxford Lieder festivals, and at venues such as the Wigmore Hall and Dartington Hall. A committed exponent of contemporary music, he has performed works by Gerald Barry, Hans Werner Henze, Harrison Birtwistle, Colin Matthews, Cecilia McDowall, George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Emily Hall, in recital, concert and staged premieres. He has recorded opera, song and oratorio extensively for multiple labels.

Murray graduated in Music & History from the University of Newcastle and studied voice at the Royal College of Music before joining the National Opera Studio. He was a Jette Parker Young Artist at the ROH.
