Gemma Rosefield (cello)

Winner of the prestigious Pierre Fournier Award, Gemma Rosefield enjoys a flourishing international career as a soloist and chamber musician. Described by The Strad magazine as a ‘mesmerising musical treasure’, she performs regularly throughout the UK, Europe, North America, Mexico and Japan, including recent appearances at the Wigmore Hall, the South Bank, the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and The Diligentia, The Hague, as part of the New Masters Series.

First prize-winner in the European Music for Youth Competition, Gemma Rosefield made her international concerto debut at the age of sixteen, giving a televised performance of Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto No 1 with the Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra. She went on to win numerous prizes and awards, including several at the Royal Academy of Music, the coveted Gold Medal on leaving the Royal Northern College of Music, and the Maurice Ravel Premier Prix in France.

Her performances have led to works being written for her by eminent composers such as James Francis Brown, Julian Dawes, David Knotts, David Matthews, Cecilia McDowell and Rhian Samuel. She has premiered several important works by composers such as Michael Berkeley and Michael Ellison, including the latter’s Concerto for Cello, Turkish Instruments and Orchestra with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She also enjoys discovering and performing unjustly neglected cello repertoire, and has made a special study on the works of the composers of Terezín.

Her teachers have included David Strange, Ralph Kirshbaum, Johannes Goritzki, Bernard Greenhouse, Gary Hoffman and Zara Nelsova. During time spent at the Ravinia Festival, Chicago, she collaborated with artists such as Menahem Pressler and Yo-Yo Ma. She is a member of the highly praised Ensemble 360, and collaborates regularly with guitarist Morgan Szymanski and the Latin American Group Machaca.
