A prizewinner of the Aleksander Tansman International Competition, the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and the Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition, Prokofiev has pursued an international career encompassing solo, chamber, and orchestral performance.
From 2000 to 2015, he was a member of the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, performing extensively in Europe and appearing in major venues including the Auditorium du Louvre and Philharmonie de Paris, the Rudolfinum in Prague, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Philharmonie Berlin, and the Konzerthaus Berlin. He later served as Principal Cellist of the Montenegro Symphony Orchestra (2015-2021) and of the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre in Moscow during the 2022-2023 season. During the same period, he worked as Conducting Assistant to the Principal Conductor at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre.
As a soloist, Prokofiev has collaborated with conductors such as Vladimir Spivakov, Yuri Bashmet, Alexander Rudin, Milan Horvat, Dmitry Liss, Gintaras Rinkevicius, Ariel Zuckermann, Miran Vaupotic, Noam Zur, and Premil Petrovic. An avid chamber musician, he has worked with artists including Jessye Norman, Eliso Virsaladze, Nikolai Lugansky, Natalia Gutman, Jean Guillou, Ilya Gringolts, Alexander Kobrin, Olga Kern, Mikhail Lidsky, Ekaterina Skanavi, Polina Osetinskaya, Andrey Gugnin, and Rem Urasin.
He is a regular guest at international festivals such as the Vladimir Ashkenazy Festival, the Kreuth Chamber Music Festival, the Festival de Colmar, December Nights, KotorArt, La Folle Journée, and the Tiroler Festspiele. Since 2023, he has been a member of the Amsterdam Piano Trio. In 2024, he became artistic director of the cello ensemble Balkan 8. His discography includes a release devoted to twentieth-century Italian cello music.
