Claire Barnett-Jones (mezzo-soprano)

British mezzo-soprano Claire Barnett-Jones is fast becoming one of the most sought-after voices on the operatic stage and the concert platform, recently being named one of OperaWire’s Top 10 Rising Stars after being a Finalist and Winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2021.

Recent highlights have included her company debut at the Bayreuther Festspiele as 2nd Norn (Wagner Götterdämmerung) and Waltraute (Wagner Die Walküre); her French operatic debut as Ježibaba in a new Stefano Poda production of Dvořák’s Rusalka at the Théâtre du Capitole (Toulouse); role and company debuts as Fricka (Die Walküre) at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl in Austria; and as Madame Flora in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium for Oper Frankfurt. She recently made her European concert debut at Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in Schumann’s Szenen aus Goethes Faust, conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner; Sosostris in Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Edward Gardner at the Royal Festival Hall; and her BBC Proms debut with a solo recital as part of the Proms at Birmingham in 2022.

Claire has also performed with Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Glyndebourne Touring Opera, English National Opera (ENO), Welsh National Opera, and Scottish Opera, and was awarded the Lilian Baylis Award for Outstanding Potential in the Field of Opera in recognition of her ENO debut as Eurydice Myth / Persephone in Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus.

In concert, Claire has performed Beethoven’s Symphony No 9, Handel’s Messiah, and Verdi’s Requiem, and has given recitals at Snape Maltings, the Ludlow English Song Festival, the Wigmore Hall with Iain Burnside, and toured the UK alongside pianist Sholto Kynoch as part of the Oxford Lieder Festival autumn touring season.

Claire studied at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Royal Academy Opera, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, is a recipient of the Sir John Tomlinson Fellowship (through ENO), and is an Independent Opera Fellow and Samling Artist (Samling Institute for Young Artists). Her studies were sponsored by the D’Oyly Carte Memorial Fund Scholarship, The George Drexler Foundation, The May Gibson Charitable Trust, The Josephine Baker Trust, The Countess of Munster Trust, The Winship Foundation, the Ian Fleming Musical Theatre Award from Help Musicians, and The William Gibbs Foundation.
