Cantus Primo Youth Choir

Cantus Primo, conducted by Gretchen Kuhrmann, is a select treble choir whose members are drawn from the Choralis Cantus Youth Choirs and the High School Scholarship Singers in Choralis. The group made its debut at the prestigious Music Center at Strathmore with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorale in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. More recently Cantus Primo has appeared at notable Washington venues including Wolf Trap, Washington National Cathedral, and National Presbyterian Church, and at the national conference of Chorus America. The young singers are featured performers each season with Choralis as well as other area symphonic choruses, and the musicianship and clarity of tone displayed by the ensemble has earned it a reputation as one of Washington’s finest treble choirs. Two works commissioned by Choralis, including Bob Chilcott’s Gloria, have included parts written specifically for Cantus Primo’s unique colour and sound. Many of its members go on to study music at university, influenced greatly by their participation in this ensemble.
