Clive Bayley (bass)

Born in Manchester, Clive Bayley sings regularly with major opera companies in a diverse repertoire spanning Monteverdi, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Berg, Britten, Birtwistle, Wagner and Ligeti.

Recent roles include Swallow (Peter Grimes) and Prison Governor (From the House of the Dead) at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Father Trulove (The Rake’s Progress), Spectre du roi défunt in Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet, and Doctor Carlos Conde in a new production of Adès’s The Exterminating Angel at the Opéra de Paris; Savël Prokofjevic Dikój (Káťa Kabanová) with Grange Park Opera and at the Concertgebouw; Somnus/Cadmus (Semele) at Glyndebourne; and Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) with the Norwegian Opera and Ballet. Other operatic engagements include those at the Gothenburg Opera, Oper Frankfurt, Royal Danish Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

In his native Great Britain, Clive made his debut with the Royal Opera House as Second Prisoner in Fidelio and has since appeared there in the premiere of Harrison Birtwistle’s Gawain, as Biterolf in Tannhäuser, Colline in La bohème, Hans Foltz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Carbon in Alfano’s Cyrano de Bergerac, Thoas in Iphigénie en Tauride, Silvano in La Calisto and Hunding in Die Walküre. He also works regularly with Glyndebourne, Grange Park Opera, Opera North and Welsh National Opera.

Clive’s recordings include many in the Chandos ‘Opera in English’ series, including Ferrando (Il trovatore), Varlaam (Boris Godunov highlights) and Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni), as well as Fafner and Hunding in the Hallé’s Ring cycle under Sir Mark Elder, Candide with Leonard Bernstein, and recordings with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants.
