January 2020 Releases

Two of the twentieth century's symphonic peaks make a thrilling pairing in January's Record of the Month. With Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in complete command of both scores, Vaughan Williams Symphonies Nos 3 & 4—the next instalment in what Classical Source has hailed 'an inspired VW symphony cycle'—is required listening. And if the Bartók & Korngold Piano Quintets appear at first sight a more unexpected coupling, the two composers' names rarely seen together, this is just the sort of creative programming at which Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet excel, with exciting performances to match.

Any solo recital from Stephen Hough promises abundant musical insight, and the four sets of Brahms's Final Piano Pieces have seldom sounded so affectingly beautiful as here, their confessional, reflective mood perfectly judged. Turning once more to their spiritual and musical homeland, Stephen Rice and The Brabant Ensemble present Hellinck Missa Surrexit pastor and Lupi Te Deum & motets. As always where these artists are concerned, this is no mere archaeological dig but a convincing revivification of two important figures from the Renaissance.

On their own label The Hallé Orchestra and Sir Mark Elder turn to the Debussy Nocturnes & other orchestral works, the composer's enigmatic 'scènes au crépuscule' complemented by the treacherous clarinet rhapsody, an early Rossetti cantata, and two rather less well known delights.

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales has recorded three Symphonies by Christopher Gunning for Signum Classics. For decades a master of the soundtrack genre, whether big screen or television drama, the composer's more strictly classical output proves to be a rich resource, and one clearly relished by its committed performers under the baton of Kenneth Woods.

Also from Signum, this month offers two further instalments in Llŷr Williams' magisterial Schubert Piano Music compendium. Volume 3 comprises the sonatas D958 in C minor—the first of the great trilogy written in the final months of Schubert's life—and D850 in D major, a work from altogether happier times as the composer holidayed in the Austrian Alps. Volume 4 takes a break from the official sonatas, instead revelling in the delights of the two sets of impromptus, D899 and D935.
