Frank Martin's opera Der Sturm has never been recorded before. This live performance by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under Thierry Fischer, with Robert Holl as Prospero and Christine Buffle as Miranda, offers at last an opportunity for this unique masterpiece to re-assert its deserved place in the repertory.
Florian Boesch makes his Hyperion debut with Roger Vignoles in an ebullient recital of Ballads & Songs by Carl Loewe, revealing a lot more than the 'other' Erlkönig, and the wonderful all-male voices of Cinquecento uncover the complete surviving works of Philipp Schoendorff, along with his two Mass models and a Magnificat by Philippe de Monte (the cover picture is a vegetable-based portrait of the two composers' employer, the Habsburg Rudolf II).
Three Helios re-issues this month: Bruckner and Strauss chamber music from The Raphael Ensemble, a much-neglected recital of Haydn Songs (Bernarda Fink, Lisa Milne, John Mark Ainsley and Roger Vignoles), and the first in a series of Victoria Masses from Westminster Cathedral.
