Wolf originally planned Wo ich bin, mich rings umdunkelt as number five in the Liederstrauss sequence. It is easy to imagine why he omitted it, as its melodramatic gestures never quite gel into a coherent whole.

Wolf avait à l’origine prévu de faire du huitième lied, Wo ich bin, mich rings umdunkelt, le cinquième de la Liederstrauss série. Il n’est guère difficile d’imaginer pourquoi il l’a omis, ses envolées mélodramatiques ne parvenant jamais totalement à former un tout cohérent.

Das achte Lied, Wo ich bin, mich rings umdunkelt, hatte Wolf ursprünglich als Nummer fünf in der Liederstrauss Reihenfolge eingeplant. Es ist gut verständlich, warum er es herausnahm, da die melodramatischen Gesten des Liedes nie die Gestalt eines zusammenhängenden Ganzen annehmen.
