In Horowitz’s blistering virtuoso arrangement of Saint-Saëns' Danse macabre the chimes of midnight set the stage for ‘nights black agents’ (Macbeth), as one embellishment follows another, even including a brief, quasi-fugal development.

Le fossé qui sépare le «Clair de lune» de Debussy de la Danse macabre de Saint-Saëns est en effet très large, et il ne l’est jamais autant que dans l’arrangement virtuose et foudroyant d’Horowitz, où les carillons de minuit ouvrent la voie aux «agents noirs de la nuit» (Macbeth), tandis que les embellissements se succèdent, y compris un bref développement quasi-fugué.
