Reviews

‘[Cardoso's] Requiem is a compelling work, especially when sung with this degree of commitment. It’s a quality that shines throughout the recording. The selection of motets is very satisfying … this is the first recording by Cupertinos for Hyperion and it is a pleasure to have a Portuguese ensemble tackle its native repertory’ (Gramophone)

‘Dubbed 'the national team of Portuguese polyphony', Cupertinos' debut disc showcases their fellow countryman Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650). Beautifully sung by unaccompanied voices, this programme of devotional music is built around the contemplative Requiem’ (BBC Music Magazine)

‘Anyone interested in golden age Portuguese polyphony will find much to appreciate here, not just in these well-focused performances but in Toscano’s notes’ (BBC Record Review)

‘The performers here are the Portuguese choir Cupertinos under their regular music director Luís Toscano. They are a new name on Hyperion’s roster of artists and I, for one look forward to future recordings, as they invest this repertoire with a tangible Iberian flavour which results in a sound that is simultaneously airy and sun-drenched … Cardoso’s four-part Requiem is a real find. The various solo cantors from Cupertinos who commence each section seem to surf the airwaves of the Basílica's marvellous acoustic. The essence of this work seems to incorporate a softer focus, which yields expressive dividends from this particular choir. It is a rare delight to hear a group whose blend, if anything, favours the higher voices … a fine debut from this Portuguese group’ (MusicWeb International)» More

Sitivit anima mea brings the most rewards and … its poise and commitment do much to convey Cardoso’s superb artistry’ (Classical Source)

The six-voice motet Sitivit anima mea is one of Cardoso’s best-known and most widely performed works. Alongside the dedication to the future king, the text longing for freedom and anticipating the coming of the Saviour invites interpretation as one of many more or less veiled calls for Portuguese independence which permeate the music of the Idade de Ouro.
