When Debussy returned to the poem Clair de lune in 1891, he rewrote it completely. It’s not hard to see why: this earlier version, from late in 1882, is metrically much squarer than its successor, consisting mostly of four-bar phrases. (The internal repetitions, however, did become a hallmark of his later style, leading one critic to label him ‘the stutterer’.)

Lorsque Debussy revint au poème Clair de lune en 1891, il réécrivit complètement sa mélodie. Il n’est pas difficile de comprendre pourquoi: sur le plan métrique, cette première version, qui date de la fin de l’année 1882, est beaucoup plus carrée que celle qui suivit; elle se compose essentiellement de phrases de quatre mesures (les reprises internes allaient toutefois devenir une caractéristique de son style ultérieur, poussant un critique à le traiter de «bègue»).

Als Debussy 1891 zu dem Gedicht Clair de lune zurückkehrte, schrieb er sein Stück völlig um. Es lässt sich unschwer nachvollziehen, weshalb er das tat. Diese frühere Version (vom Ende des Jahres 1882) ist metrisch deutlich regelmäßiger gehalten als ihr Nachfolgewerk und besteht hauptsächlich aus Viertakt-Phrasen. (Die inneren Wiederholungen wurden jedoch ein Markenzeichen seines späteren Stils, weshalb ein Kritiker ihn als „den Stotterer“ bezeichnete.)
