Dohnányi arranged the Two Waltzes of Johann Strauss in 1928, the year in which he gave the 1,500th concert of his career and returned to the Liszt Academy as a professor of piano. The second waltz is an arrangement of Strauss’s Du und Du (‘You and you’), based on themes from his popular operetta Die Fledermaus (‘The bat’). While Strauss’s original waltzes are mere piano reductions from his operatic scores, Dohnányi’s arrangements are extensive and inventive fantasies in the tradition of Franz Liszt’s virtuosic piano transcriptions.

Dohnányi arrangea les Deux valses de Johann Strauss en 1928, année de son mille cinq centième concert et de son retour à l’Académie Liszt, comme professeur de piano. La seconde est un arrangement de Du und Du, fondé sur des thèmes de la populaire opérette straussienne Die Fledermaus («La chauve-souris»). Si les valses originales de Strauss sont de simples réductions pour piano des partitions opératiques, les arrangements de Dohnányi sont des fantaisies considérables et inventives, dans la veine des transcriptions pianistiques virtuoses de Franz Liszt.

Dohnányi bearbeitete die Zwei Walzer von Johann Strauß im Jahre 1928, in dem er das 1.500 Konzert seiner Karriere gab und als Klavierprofessor an die Liszt-Akademie zurückkehrte.
