Albert Zabel was born in Berlin in 1834. Through a scholarship obtained for him by Meyerbeer, he studied at the Berlin Institut fur Kirchenmusik where his harp teacher was Louis Grimm. From the age of eleven he toured for three years with Gungl’s band, travelling to Russia, England and the United States. At fourteen he was appointed solo harpist to the Berlin Opera and in 1855 he moved to St Petersburg to become solo harpist with the Imperial Ballet, remaining there for the rest of his life. In 1862 Anton Rubinstein founded the St Petersburg Conservatory and appointed Zabel as teacher of the harp. He became professor in 1879 and, subsequently, honorary distinguished professor in 1904. He died in 1910 in St Petersburg.
Zabel left a sizeable number of compositions for the harp, including a concerto in C minor, Op 35. Am Springbrunnen, or La Source as it is often called, is probably his most famous composition for the harp.

Albert Zabel naît à Berlin en 1834. Grâce à une bourse qu’obtient pour lui Meyerbeer, il étudie la harpe à l’Institut für Kirchenmusik (Institut de musique religieuse) de Berlin sous la tutelle de Louis Grimm. Dès l’âge de onze ans, il part pour trois ans avec le groupe de Gungl et joue en Russie, en Angleterre et aux États-Unis. À quatorze ans, il est nommé harpiste soliste de l’Opéra de Berlin et en 1855 il part pour Saint-Pétersbourg pour devenir le harpiste soliste du Ballet Impérial et c’est là qu’il restera jusqu’à la fin de sa vie. En 1862, Anton Rubinstein fonde le Conservatoire de Saint-Pétersbourg et nomme Zabel en tant que professeur de harpe. Il devient professeur en 1879 puis professeur honoris causa en 1904. Il décède en 1910 à Saint-Pétersbourg.
Zabel a laissé un grand nombre de compositions pour la harpe, notamment un concerto en do mineur, Op 35. Am Springbrunnen est probablement son morceau le plus célèbre pour la harpe.

Er blieb dort für den Rest seines Lebens. 1862 gründete Anton Rubinstein das St. Petersburger Konservatorium und ernannte Zabel zum außerordentlichen Professor für Harfe. 1879 wurde Zabel der Titel eines ordentlichen Professors verliehen, und 1904 der Ehrentitel als Verdienter Professor. Er starb 1910 in St. Petersburg.
Zabel hinterließ eine beachtliche Anzahl von Kompositionen für die Harfe, einschließlich eines Konzerts in c-Moll, op. 35. „Am Springbrunnen“, oder „La Source“—wie das Stück auch häufig genannt wird, ist wahrscheinlich sein berühmtestes Harfenstück.
