Hyperion welcomes 2018 with Debussy Piano Music, Stephen Hough's distinguished hommage to this most revolutionary of French composers in the centenary of his death. This matchless recital comprises some of his most important and original works, including both books of 'Images', 'Estampes' and 'Children's Corner', and is a self-recommending Record of the Month for January. A rather different (if equally tantalizing) prospect comes courtesy of Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, who deliver incendiary accounts of Tippett Symphonies Nos 1 & 2; the first instalment in a complete cycle of these still seriously underrated works. This is an indispensable release for any lover of twentieth-century orchestral music.

Journeying five and a half centuries back in time, Obrecht's Missa Grecorum & motets is an exploration of the music of—in his day—one of the most widely admired composers to have emerged from the Low Countries. Stephen Rice and The Brabant Ensemble are our authoritative guides. While Pixis Piano Trios offer the perfect tonic to dispel midwinter blues: anyone who imagines chamber music to be unyielding stern stuff shouldn't miss another delightful release from the Leonore Piano Trio, who again lavish their customary attention and affection on a neglected corner of the repertory.

1equalmusic brings us a new version of Antony Pitts' Jerusalem-Yerushalayim, the electrifying performance by the composer's own crack ensemble Tonus Peregrinus (and a sizeable supporting cast) of this 'sacred jazz' oratorio now remixed and completed with evocative narration from David Suchet.

The Sacconi Quartet has recorded the six Graham Fitkin String Quartets for Signum. Better known perhaps for his motoric percussion infusions, these six works span some fifteen years and share the same hypnotic rhythmic drive. A sixth volume in his Complete Bach Organ Works series once more finds David Goode at the Metzler console of Trinity College Chapel in Cambridge, this time revelling in a programme of chorale preludes and variations suitable for Christmas and Epiphany.

Sacred choral works by Roderick Williams reveals a lesser-known side of this renowned singer: his music elicits performances by turns mellifluous, contemplative and riotous from the Old Royal Naval College Trinity Laban Chapel Choir. Ralph Allwood conducts this new Signum album.
