Phil Gault (baritone)

The Welsh baritone Phil Gault studied at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and at the RSAMD (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) with Alan Watt before studying privately with Patricia MacMahon and Paul Farrington. He has toured Wales with Opra Cymru in the title roles of Verdi’s Macbeth and Rossini’s Barber Sefil. Gault has also performed with the Scottish, Buxton Festival and Northampton Festival operas, is principal baritone for Opera on a Shoestring, co-founded Black Sheep Opera, and is a Samling and a Crear scholar. Other roles include Don Giovanni, King Roger, Nabucco, Tarquinius, the Count (The Marriage of Figaro), Dandini, Junius, Nick Shadow, Escamillo, Morales, El Dancaïro and Chao Lin (A Night at the Chinese Opera).

Gault has given recitals in the Usher Hall, Wales Millennium Centre, Riverfront Centre and Paxton House. His song repertory includes Dichterliebe, Chansons Gaillardes, Songs of Travel, Italienisches Liederbuch and A Shropshire Lad, while in oratorio he ranges from Carmina Burana and A Sea Symphony to Bach’s Passions and cantatas.

Gault’s recordings include music by Philip Wilby (with the Black Dyke Band, and the Brontë Mass under David Hill), John Caldwell and the Scottish composer Robin Downie.
