Stene, Randi (mezzo-soprano)

Randi Stene (mezzo-soprano)

Randi Stene, mezzo soprano, was educated in Oslo and at the Operaakademiet in Copenhagen. Her debut at the Royal Theatre was in 1989, and since then her roles have included Octavian in Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Gertrude in Thomas’ Hamlet, Bragäne in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Orpheus in Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice, the title role in Bizet’s Carmen and Clarion in Richard Strauss’ Capriccio. Her performance of Octavian at the Opéra de la Bastille was her genuine international breakthrough. Since then, Randi Stene has performed at Covent Garden, the New York Metropolitan Opera, Paris’ Châtelet Theatre, and in opera houses in Brussels, Stockholm, Lausanne and other major cities, principally as Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Varvara in Janáček’s Katya Kabanova and, again, the title role in Bizet’s Carmen.

Randi Stene is also known as a great concert soloist and performs regularly with all the great Danish and Norwegian orchestras. She has performed at the BBC Proms, at the Royal Albert Hall, the Edinburgh International Festival, in Berlin, Brussels, London, Helsinki and Istanbul, to name but a few. She has recorded numerous CDs, and often participates in TV and radio productions. In 2000 Randi Stene returned to the Royal Danish Opera as a permanent member of the ensemble.
