René Pape, one of the leading basses of his generation, received his musical education in Dresden. In 1988, while still a student, he debuted with the Berlin State Opera and remains a member of the company to this day. Following his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1995 he has appeared in every season since, and also performs regularly at other leading opera houses across the world. He has taken part in the festivals at Bayreuth, Glyndebourne, Lucerne, Salzburg, and Verbier, as well as Florence’s Maggio Musicale and the Stars of the White Nights festival in St Petersburg, and his notable roles include Wotan (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Gurnemanz (Parsifal), Méphistophélès (Faust), Escamillo (Carmen), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Orest (Elektra), the title role in Boris Godunov, and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) with Sir Georg Solti. René Pape has won two Grammy Awards and was named “2002 Singer of the Year” by the magazine Musical America. He appears on numerous recording for labels including BMG, EMI, DGG, TELDEC, and the Mariinsky label.
