2018 marks fifty years of The King's Singers—probably the most outrageously successful a cappella group ever. The King's Singers Gold is a celebratory triple album being released on Signum Classics: the six current members revel in perennial favourites newly recorded and show off some new additions to their repertoire. Also released this month is The King's Singers Christmas Presence, recorded live in the Chapel of King’s College Cambridge on 4 December 2015, and a perfectly judged programme to mark the season. In winter's arms is the title of an album of Christmas music by Bob Chilcott (himself a former King's Singer, of course). These performances by the massed forces of the American Choralis foundation under director Gretchen Kuhrmann were recorded at the end of Chilcott's period as their composer in residence.

New on the King's Cambridge label this month is an innovative coupling of Vaughan Williams's Dona nobis pacem and the Bernstein Chichester Psalms. A reduced orchestration for the former has been made by Jonathan Rathbone, the better to match with the size of choir and acoustic—it is here enthusiastically embraced by the Britten Sinfonia. Stephen Cleobury conducts The Choir of King's College Cambridge.

In chains of gold – The Complete Consort Anthems of Orlando Gibbons hands wondrous performers Fretwork, His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts and the Magdalena Consort some of the finest music of an English Golden Age. This new album from Signum Classics is teasingly subtitled 'The English Pre-Restoration Verse Anthem Vol. 1'. Mary Bevan and Joseph Middleton renew their partnership in Voyages, an exposition of the poetry of Charles Baudelaire through songs by Fauré, Duparc, Debussy and others. Bohemia takes violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen and pianist Huw Watkins on a folk-inspired journey through all things Bohemian in the years leading up to the First World War. The programme is framed by the violin sonatas of Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček.
