Chan, Lyle (b?)

Lyle Chan

born: ?
country: Australia

Lyle Chan is known for his socially-conscious works combining powerful emotional impact and intellectual rigour. His 90-minute string quartet, a memoir of his years as an AIDS activist in the 1990s, was hailed by John Corigliano as 'a serious and deeply felt work of art born out of a seemingly endless plague'. His epistolary song cycle My Dear Benjamin, based on Benjamin Britten’s little-known first romantic relationship, won the 2017 Orchestral Work of the Year prize (Art Music Awards). Lyle is credited as executive producer on over 200 commercial recordings, including premieres of John Tavener’s Lament for Jerusalem and numerous Australian works, notably of Peter Sculthorpe. His business consultancy has represented the catalogues of major publishers like Schirmer, Chester and Leduc for the Asia-Pacific region. He is co-founder of the Extended Play Festival of New Music in Sydney and a member of the selection jury for Classical:Next in Rotterdam.
