August 2016 Releases

Unfamiliar Mozart & Clementi Piano Concertos constitute August's Record of the Month: unfamiliar because the Mozart in question is Franz Xaver, Wolfgang Amadeus's youngest child. The Sinfonieorchester St Gallen makes a Hyperion debut, with Howard Shelley—in his familiar dual role of soloist and conductor—proving the most persuasive advocate in this third volume of Hyperion's Classical Piano Concerto series. The Romantic Violin Concerto also welcomes another addition to its ranks—volume 20—with a thrilling, all-Polish album of the Stojowski Violin Concerto & Wieniawski Fantaisie brillante. Both are brilliantly dispatched by Hyperion newcomer Bartłomiej Nizioł; the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra accompanies with Łukasz Borowicz making a welcome return as conductor.

All of Angela Hewitt's considerable authority is to the fore in Beethoven Piano Sonatas Op 14/1, 31/1, 49 & 81a, an album (the sixth in her ongoing survey) which includes the great 'Les adieux'. If the name of Bernardino de Ribera is less familiar than that of his great near-contemporary Alonso Lobo, his music is in no way inferior, as premiere recordings of the Ribera Magnificats & motets demonstrate. The all-male voices of De Profundis are directed by David Skinner.

In 2013 the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev gave an extended series of concerts across Europe. Recorded live at the orchestra's Barbican home, a gripping rendition of Berlioz Roméo et Juliette now available from LSO Live was a major highlight, and features inspirational soloists Olga Borodina, Kenneth Tarver and Evgeny Nikitin.
