April 2014 Releases

Our Record of the Month for April 2014 comes from the wonderful Iestyn Davies and Thomas Dunford (making his Hyperion debut): Dowland The Art of Melancholy presents a thought-provoking sequence of twenty songs and lute solos. The Takács Quartet are joined by Lawrence Power for a much-anticipated new recording of the Brahms String Quintets, while the French chamber repertoire finds the Goldner String Quartet thoroughly enjoying the Vierne String Quartet and Pierné Piano Quintet, once again joined at the piano by Piers Lane.

Two exciting violinists make their first recordings for Hyperion this month: Eugene Ugorski performs the two Młynarski Violin Concertos (a fifteenth volume in our Romantic Violin Concerto series), Michał Dworzyński conducting a top-form BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and Jack Liebeck pairs up with Katya Apekisheva for a whirlwind programme of Kreisler Violin Music.

Re-issued at budget price this month are James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkling through Countertenor duets by Purcell and Blow, the complete Wolf Eichendorff-Lieder sympathetically performed by Stephan Genz, and—from Gimell and The Tallis Scholars—a welcome return of the pioneering 1984 Tavener Ikon of Light recording. Historical piano label APR is releasing a quadruple album of Arthur de Greef Solo and concerto recordings dating from 1917 to 1931.

Newly available for download from the Hyperion website: the treasures on offer from Linn Records explode onto the scene with a fantastic new Mozart Requiem from the multi-award-winning Dunedin Consort, and Anthony Payne's intriguing new chamber version of Bruckner Symphony No 2 which has been recorded by the Royal Academy of Music Soloists Ensemble under Trevor Pinnock.
