April 2010 Releases

Hyperion's April 2010 release is headed up by a double-bill from Stephen Hough. First, as Record of the Month, Hough offers up a lavishly celebratory 50th volume in our Romantic Piano Concerto series, the Tchaikovsky Concertos and Concert Fantasia drawing exhilarating support from the Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä. Then Hough turns his wondrous hands to Chopin Late Masterpieces in a solo programme of great grandeur.

More Tchaikovsky, of sorts, from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Ilan Volkov in the enchanted reworkings of the Stravinsky Fairy's Kiss, here coupled with the Scènes de ballet.

Constrasting sacred music come from Westminster Abbey Choir and James O'Donnell in O praise the Lord, a day in the life of the choir around the time of the English Restoration with music by Purcell, Blow and others, and from David Trendell and The Choir of King's College London with a pioneering recording of Rogier's Missa Ego sum qui sum.

Chamber music comes from Hagai Shaham and Arnon Erez in a new recital of Violin Sonatas by Dohnányi & Janáček, a fascinating pairing enhanced by some intriguing miniatures.

Two chamber re-issues as well: Oboe Concertos by Albinoni & Vivaldi from Paul Goodwin and The King's Consort, and the Glinka & Tchaikovsky Piano Trios in seminal renditions by The Moscow Rachmaninov Trio.
