Introduction
Allegro
The peasant celebrates with dance and song
the sweet pleasure of a rich harvest
and, ablaze with Bacchus’ liquor,
many conclude their pleasure with slumber.

Adagio molto
The fresh air provides satisfaction,
and the season, which invites so many
to the pleasure of sweetest slumber,
causes many to abandon dance and song.

Allegro
At dawn the hunters emerge
with horns, guns and dogs.
The wild animal takes flight while they give chase;
terrified and tired by the noise of the guns and dogs, wounded,
the prey struggles on but, overwhelmed, dies.

from notes by Antonio Vivaldi
