Spring has arrived and the birds proclaim her return with joyful song
and, at the breath of the Zephyrs, murmuring streams flow:
thunder and lightning, those harbingers of Spring,
cover the sky with a dark mantle,
and then, when the storms fall silent,
the birds resume their melodious song:

and, on the flower-strewn meadow,
to the welcome murmuring of branches and trees,
the goatherd sleeps, his dependable dog beside him.

Led by the festive sound of a shepherd’s bagpipe,
nymphs and shepherds dance at the joyful appearance of spring.

from notes by Antonio Vivaldi
