Reviews

‘The clarity of intonation and line has the freshness of an illuminated page of manuscript revealed for the first time for two thirds of a millenium’ (Early Music Review)
Quant je ne voy (R21), a three-voice rondeau, plays, as often in rondeaux, with the word-sound: ‘n’oy’ (‘I don’t hear’), ‘noy’ (‘snow’) and ‘anoye’ (‘annoys’). Like B40, this rondeau is found only in the very late manuscript G, suggesting that it was composed towards the end of Machaut’s life. It shares B40’s tunefulness, but is characterized by long displacement syncopations and melismas in the cantus voice.
