Benjamin Appl (baritone)

Described as ‘the current front-runner in the new generation of Lieder singers’ (Gramophone), Benjamin Appl, Gramophone Award Young Artist of the Year 2016, was a BBC New Generation Artist from 2014 to 2016, a Wigmore Hall Emerging Artist, and the ECHO Rising Star for the 2015–16 season. His first solo album of German and English song, ‘Heimat’, won the prestigious Prix Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Best Lieder Singer) at the 2017/18 Académie du disque lyrique’s Orphées d’Or.

His many concert appearances take him around the globe and have included performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Roger Norrington, the NHK Symphony Orchestra under Paavo Järvi, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Concerto Köln, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Gabrieli Consort & Players, Les Violons du Roy, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Seattle Symphony, Vienna Symphony, the Symphony Orchestra of India, at Osaka Castle Hall, and the major BBC orchestras.

An established recitalist, Benjamin had the good fortune to be mentored by one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He earned acclaim for his US recital debut at New York’s Park Avenue Armoury singing all three Schubert Lieder cycles. The New York Times called his performance ‘masterly’ and noted that he ‘rendered the audience breathless.’ He regularly appears in recital at major festivals around the world including the Ravinia, Rheingau, Schleswig-Holstein, Edinburgh International, Oxford Lieder festivals, Heidelberger Frühling, and Klavier-Festival Ruhr; and at leading venues including Wigmore Hall, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, Schubertiade in Hohenems and Schwarzenberg, Paris’s Musée de Louvre and the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

Benjamin has also starred in the annual ZDF Advent Concert, a beloved tradition in Germany broadcast on ZDF.
