Sir Thomas Allen (baritone)

Sir Thomas Allen is an established star of the great opera houses of the world. It is 50 years since he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he has sung over 50 roles. 2021 also marks the 40th anniversary of his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, as Papageno (Mozart The Magic Flute). He is particularly known for his Billy Budd (Britten Billy Budd), Pelléas (Debussy Pelléas et Mélisande), Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky Eugene Onegin), Ulisse (Monteverdi Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria) and Beckmesser (Wagner Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), as well as the great Mozart roles of Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Don Alfonso and Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Papageno, and, of course, Don Giovanni. An acclaimed recitalist, he is equally renowned on the concert platform and has appeared with the world’s great orchestras and conductors, including Sir Georg Solti, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Bernard Haitink, Sir Simon Rattle, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Riccardo Muti.

Sir Thomas Allen is Chancellor of Durham University, a position he has held since 2012. His many honours include the title of Bayerischer Kammersänger awarded by the Bayerische Staatsoper. In the New Year Honours List of 1989 he was created a Commander of the British Empire and in the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours he was made a Knight Bachelor. Among his proudest achievements are having a Channel Tunnel locomotive named after him, and, most recently, being awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music 2013.
