Welsh National Opera Orchestra

Welsh National Opera exists to bring the power, drama and raw emotion of opera to as wide an audience as possible. The Company plays a valuable role in the communities it serves, entertaining and inspiring audiences both across the UK and internationally.

Since its formation in 1970, WNO Orchestra has established itself as one of the UK’s finest ensembles, delivering a wonderful array of symphonic, chamber and self-directed concert programmes on an annual basis. Touring is the lifeblood of the Company and WNO Orchestra enjoy a global reputation, with notable appearances at the Hong Kong Festival, in Dubai, Oman, Morocco and most recently at the Leoš Janáček Festival Brno 2022 and the Prague Spring Festival in May 2023.

For the past forty years, WNO Orchestra has featured as one of two orchestras that accompany the internationally renowned BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition at St David’s Hall in Cardiff.

Former WNO Music Directors include Lothar Koenigs and the late Sir Charles Mackerras. Czech conductor Tomáš Hanus joined WNO as Music Director in August 2016, and has led the Company in numerous new productions, including Prokofiev's War and Peace, Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, and Bizet's Carmen. Tomáš has continued WNO’s legacy of championing the music of Janáček, with critically acclaimed performances of From the House of the Dead, The Cunning Little Vixen, Jenůfa and a new production of The Makropulos Affair. Carlo Rizzi has enjoyed two periods as WNO Music Director and has held the role of Conductor Laureate since 2015. Carlo returns to WNO to conduct a new production of Puccini's Il trittico in the Summer of 2024.

Beyond the conventional performance arenas, WNO Orchestra, in line with the Company’s commitment to young artistic talent, operates an extensive side-by-side mentoring scheme through rehearsal and performance programmes with students. This activity has been taking place through partnerships with the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Greenwich.
