Stephen Rice is a lecturer in music at the University of Southampton, where he held (2008–2011) a Fellowship in the Creative and Performing Arts, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Formerly a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, he gained a doctorate from Oxford University in 2004, with a dissertation on the five-part motets of Nicolas Gombert (c1495–c1560). He has published on the music of Thomas Tallis, Cristóbal de Morales, Jacobus Clemens non Papa, and Josquin Des Prez, and on the theorist Matheo de Aranda. He was Director of the New Chamber Opera Studio (2000–2005) and Director of Music at the church of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford (2003–2011).
