February 2017 Releases

The Anglican choral tradition in the twentieth century can be heard at its finest in Hyperion's February Record of the Month. Choral Music by Finzi, Bax & Ireland allows us to explore its rich musical heritage in the distinguished company of James O’Donnell and Westminster Abbey Choir, who are simply without peer in this repertoire. Music from much the same period, charged with a very different sense of pathos, is at the heart of the Bloch, Ligeti & Dallapiccola Suites for solo cello; an extraordinary recital programme devised and consummately realized by Natalie Clein.

No music is more guaranteed to drive dull care away than the Haydn String Quartets Opp 54 & 55: six quartets from the late 1780s—the peak of Haydn’s maturity—to which The London Haydn Quartet respond with all their customary vim and vigour. While in Taneyev & Rimsky-Korsakov Piano Trios, the Leonore Piano Trio again demonstrates why each new release is cause for celebration, bringing us two Romantic Russian chamber works brimful of melody.
