January 2017 Releases

Hyperion welcomes the new year with a sublime Record of the Month: Bach Cantatas Nos 54, 82 & 170 are deeply felt meditations on faith and mortality, as moving as anything in music. Iestyn Davies, in his fourth solo album for Hyperion, is the distinguished soloist; Jonathan Cohen and Arcangelo again prove the most sympathetic of accompanists. The values and virtues of the Classical Enlightenment are to the fore in Piano Concertos Nos 1, 5 & 6 by Leopold Kozeluch. Howard Shelley presides over the latest in our Classical Piano Concerto series, directing the London Mozart Players from the keyboard.

Admirers of fine string playing are well served this month. Bruch Violin Concerto No 2 & other works completes our mini series of the composer's works for violin and orchestra, courtesy of Jack Liebeck, Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Meanwhile Alban Gerhardt offers his own unique tribute to one of the twentieth century's most remarkable musicians: Rostropovich Encores is a dazzling confection of shorter works played by, written by, or made famous by the great Russian cellist.
