Rupert Gough’s Royal Holloway Choir bring us a wonderful album of English Romantic Madrigals: nineteenth-century part-songs by Pearsall, Stainer, Parry and others, many of which were written in homage to the great Elizabethan tradition, and all overdue for revival. The Renaissance splendours of Lamentations and other sacred music by Alonso Lobo can seldom have sounded so glorious as in the new recording from Martin Baker and Westminster Cathedral Choir, very much on their spiritual home turf.
A new release from LSO Live brings us two ground-breaking works from the dawn of the twentieth century: Scriabin Symphonies Nos 1 & 2. The six-movement No 1 is a remarkably ambitious work for a composer in his early twenties, and includes a grandiose choral finale; No 2—at the publisher's insistence—does not. Valery Gergiev conducts an enthused London Symphony Orchestra.
There are three new recordings from Signum Classics this month. In Where'er you walk—Arias for Handel's favourite tenor Allan Clayton takes on the mantle of the acclaimed John Beard: gloriously sung arias accompanied by the expert Classical Opera and Ian Page. A new cycle of recordings from St John's College Choir Cambridge and Andrew Nethsingha has produced Deo—Choral and organ works by Jonathan Harvey, a composer whose association with the college spanned most of his life. Francis Poulenc's Works for Piano Solo and Duo enshrines many of this composer's most sublime moments for his beloved instrument into performances of crystalline beauty from Lucille Chung and, as appropriate, husband Alessio Bax.
