The Cardinall's Musick and their more-than-eminent director Andrew Carwood are masters of the repertoire when it comes to the English Renaissance. This month they gloriously immerse themselves in the Tallis Lamentations—at once heartfelt and defiant. From Garrick Ohlsson we have a toe-tapping recital of Smetana Czech Dances—the composer's riposte to Chopin's Mazurkas. Also included is the atmospheric On the seashore.
Julian Bliss has made a thrilling new album for Signum Classics: with the hugely successful Carducci String Quartet he improbably couples the sublime Brahms Clarinet Quintet with the hot-off-the-press Gumboots by David Bruce, a triumphant pairing guaranteed to raise an appreciative smile. Songs to the moon is the debut album from The Myrthen Ensemble—the very finest young singers in a rich programme ranging from Brahms and Schumann to Warlock and Barber.
Signum also sees the release this month of two new albums of modern choral works. Uplifting, melodious and approachable, Alexander L'Estrange's On eagles' wings is a programme of new sacred music, performed by the ever-flawless Tenebrae and Nigel Short. Bernard Hughes' I am the song is an altogether more earthy affair, the BBC Singers ducking the baton of Paul Brough and audibly revelling in this world of medieval skulduggery.
