June 2014 Releases

Hyperion's Record of the Month for June 2014 is the fruition of a long-held ambition by über-pianist Marc-André Hamelin; his juxtaposition of the Schumann Kinderszenen & Waldszenen and Janáček On the overgrown path cycles sets these captivating miniatures into refreshing relief. Neatly bisecting the period between these two composing giants, Tchaikovsky's The seasons represents the neglected solo piano output of a composer better known for his symphonies and ballets; the cycle is here recorded from the heart by Honens Laureate and Hyperion debutant Pavel Kolesnikov.

The enthralling all-male Cinquecento has recorded an unusual programme of secular works: Amorosi pensieri – Songs for the Habsburg Court features music by the contrasting characters of Philippe de Monte, Jean Guyot, Jacobus Vaet and Jacob Regnart. Psalms and Hymns of praise (Lalande, Rousseau, Fiocco, Mondonville) seamlessly intertwine with outrageously florid operatic fancies (Lacoste, Rameau, Mondonville), the singers and players of Ex Cathedra being steered faultlessly through all by Jeffrey Skidmore.
