December 2013 Releases

Hyperion's Record of the Month for December 2013 is a thrill: Stephen Hough performing the two Brahms Piano Concertos. Consummate virtuosity and characteristic intimacy are illuminated by the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg under the renowned Mark Wigglesworth. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins conclude the composer's anniversary year with thumping Hindemith Orchestral Music, a comprehensive programme of the most enduring of these entertaining works.

Angela Hewitt has recorded a fourth volume of Beethoven Piano Sonatas, a journey this time from the youthful Op 22 to the epic Op 101 in A major. A second edition of music from 13th-century France, Conductus once again presents John Potter, Christopher O'Gorman and Rogers Covey-Crump in demonstration-bracket performances of this enthralling byway of the repertoire.

Re-issued this month are the sublime Couperin Leçons de Ténèbres from James Bowman and Michael Chance, and Katarina Karnéus in a revelatory album of Sibelius Songs. On the APR label we have Selected recordings, 1927-1947 from the celebrated Bartlett & Robertson duo, and from 1equalmusic piano music of a very different hue: Steven Kings compellingly draws us into the delights of John Pitts' Airs & Fantasias.
