June 2012 Releases
|
Hyperion's Record of the Month for June 2012 sees the long-awaited third release in Marc-André Hamelin's Haydn Piano Sonatas series, another 2-for-1 must for pianophiles only perhaps equalled this month by the 57th (no less) volume in our Romantic Piano Concerto series: Martin Sturfält takes the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Manze on a merry romp through the two Wiklund Piano Concertos. Our long-standing relationship with St Paul's Cathedral Choir is re-vivified as new director of music Andrew Carwood leads captivating performances of the Mozart Missa solemnis & other works with a host of distinguished soloists. Contrasting Renaissance delights come from The Brabant Ensemble and Stephen Rice in the enlightening Mouton Missa Tu es Petrus & other works which includes the complete eight-part motets, and in Arias for Guadagni, Iestyn Davies' imaginative homage to his eponymous eighteenth-century predecessor and the wondrous vocal showpieces he inspired from the likes of Handel and Gluck; Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen provide glorious accompaniment. June's re-issues restore to the catalogue the wonderful Raphael Ensemble Mendelssohn String Quintets and the original piano versions of the Musorgsky and Prokofiev Pictures from an Exhibition & Romeo and Juliet in crisp performances from Nikolai Demidenko. |
