January 2010 Releases

The award-winning Dante Quartet presents Hyperion's record of the month for January—a matchless new album of the pioneering and enduringly popular String Quartets by Ravel and Debussy. For the second volume in his Buxtehude Organ Works compendium Christopher Herrick reveals the wonders of the restored Baroque instrument of Norway's Trondheim Cathedral, while rather more contemporary riches are explored by the virtuosic Schola Cantorum of Oxford and their conductor James Burton in a programme of Rautavaara Choral Music.

Olympian marital strife, indolent cyclopean slaves, Cupid-trafficking—all is to be found in an important new opera set presenting Antonio Cesti's Le disgrazie d'Amore, where the 'Carry On'-style mayhem is kept just within the bounds of seventeenth-century decorum by Carlo Ipata, the expert Auser Musici and a superlative line-up of soloists.

To launch our 2010 reissues, and usher in a year of Chopin celebrations, we are pleased to make available six budget-price collections of Chopin's Piano Music (and another of the chamber music) drawn from Garrick Ohlsson's definitive complete cycle. Another 2010 anniversary is the 150th birthday of Paderewski—it’s likely to be overlooked by most, but not by Hyperion as we reissue our definitive recording of his 'Polonia' Symphony, opulently performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Jerzy Maksymiuk.
