October 2009 Releases

As Record of the Month for October Hyperion is proud to offer Russian superstar—and Classical BRIT Young Performer of the Year 2009—Alina Ibragimova in a defining new recording of the Bach Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin. Organ pyrotechnics from Martin Baker complement the wondrous singing of Westminster Cathedral Choir in a wide-ranging programme From the vaults of Westminster Cathedral, while the vaults of the fin-de-siècle Belgian orchestral tradition are mined by the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in a pioneering album presenting Lodewijk Mortelmans' Homeric Symphony, enthusiastically conducted by Martyn Brabbins. And further discoveries abound in Joan Rodgers' enthralling recital of Pushkin Romances with her regular partner in the Crimea Malcolm Martineau.

No Baroque latin-texted oratorio collection could be considered complete without the Scarlatti Davidis pugna et victoria, here given a spirited performance by the expert Academia Montis Regalis under Alessandro De Marchi; a second celebration of Haydn Piano Trios comes from the immaculate Florestan Trio, and Howard Shelley's traversal of the complete Clementi Piano Sonatas reaches the magisterial Opp. 25, 26, 33 & 41.

This month's reissues comprise a contrasting double-bill from the English Chamber Orchestra, with revelatory soprano cantatas by Martucci & Respighi sung by Carol Madalin, and the Corydon Singers' definitive recording of Britten Saint Nicolas. And our contemporary choral sampler disc Dreamland—over an hour of super-budget price bliss.
