September 2009 Releases

A new recording from Angela Hewitt generally merits a 'record of the month' billing, and her latest album is no exception—masterful performances of Handel & Haydn head off a rich selection of September releases. The Cardinall's Musick bring us the latest instalment in their Complete Byrd Edition under the expert direction of Andrew Carwood, a new CD admirably complemented by re-issues from Westminster Cathedral Choir of Guerrero's 'Battle Mass' and a definitive recital subtitled 'Binchois and his contemporaries', part of The Spirits of England & France series from Gothic Voices.

A recent birthday-tribute Google banner saw Stravinsky's Ballet Music honoured with a firebird image—now Ilan Volkov leads the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a dance through three scores from the composer's years with the New York City Ballet. Alban Gerhardt, meanwhile, gives seminal performances of the Prokofiev Cello Concerto and its later sibling, the Symphony-Concerto, with electrifying support from Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic.

The 'ML Lutebook'? Music by Matthew Locke, or a scrapbook once owned by someone called 'Marg' (surname unspecified)? Elizabeth Kenny reveals all in Flying Horse, a recital offering enigma and delight in equal measure. And to round things off, Roy Goodman leads The Parley of Instruments through the complete Purcell Ayres for the Theatre—so now you know where all those tunes come from.
