June 2008 Releases

Stephen Layton heads up Hyperion's June 2008 release with a cracking performance of Handel's Dettingen Te Deum, received as a damp squib at its first performance but only because the anticipated eponymous battle was rather less than conclusive. Hagai Shaham ascends the virtuosic peaks of Brahms's Hungarian Rhapsodies in Joachim's transformational arrangement, while Lidarti's Violin Concertos admirably display the Baroque precursors of such pyrotechnical wonders. At the piano, Martin Roscoe's Nielsen set is as magisterial as it is comprehensive, while the redoubtable Roger Vignoles leads a stellar cast of recitalists through Rossini's Soirées musicales.
