Hyperion has once again won two prestigious BBC Music Magazine Awards this year. Described in the magazine’s original review as ‘a tour de force of pianism’, Steven Osborne’s recording of Piano Sonatas Nos 6, 7 & 8 by Serge Prokofiev—the ‘War Sonatas’ trilogy—has triumphed against fierce competition in the instrumental category. Steven Isserlis’s highly personal No longer mourn for me & other works for cello by Sir John Tavener, ‘magnificently performed … a deeply moving disc’, has carried off this year’s Premiere Award. Meanwhile, on Gimell, the final instalment in The Tallis ScholarsJosquin Masses series has been named Recording of the Year. Congratulations to all.

Category shortlists and winners have now been published for this year's prestigious Gramophone Awards. The magazine's jury selected six albums in each of ten categories, then choosing one album per category as winner. We are delighted that Hyperion received six nominations, with recordings by the Takács Quartet, pianists Stephen Hough, Steven Osborne and Marc-André Hamelin, and song recitalist Gerald Finley (with Julius Drake) all featured. Nicky Spence and Julius Drake were declared the winners in the solo vocal category for their wonderful Janáček recital.

Hyperion has won two prestigious BBC Music Magazine Awards this year. Described in the magazine's original review as 'a ferocious new talent', Andrey Gugnin's recording of Preludes & Piano Sonatas by Dmitri Shostakovich—his debut recording, no less—has triumphed against fierce competition in the instrumental category. In the vocal category, Nicky Spence and Julius Drake have received the award for their recording of Janáček The diary of one who disappeared, 'a magnificent realisation of a viscerally rewarding work'. Hyperion’s newest choral signing has won this year’s Gramophone Award in the Early Music category with a luminescent performance of Manuel Cardoso’s four-voice Requiem: ‘A compelling work, especially when sung with this degree of commitment. It’s a quality that shines throughout … this is the first recording by Cupertinos for Hyperion and it is a pleasure to have a Portuguese ensemble tackle its native repertory’ (Gramophone). The Gramophone Awards 2014 have been announced. In the Baroque Instrumental category, Mahan Esfahani playing the CPE Bach Württemberg Sonatas (his debut recording for Hyperion) has triumphed. Linn Records has a winner also: the Choral category winner is the wonderful Mozart Requiem from the Dunedin Consort & John Butt, the second time this illustrious group has won a Gramophone award. » Read more about it on the Gramophone website.

Sir Charles Mackerras' Beethoven Cycle

We are delighted that the influential ‘Building a Library’ section of popular BBC Radio 3 programme CD Review has just selected our recording of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony as the best version of that work. This recording is part of the already much-praised complete cycle of Beethoven Symphonies recorded live at the Edinburgh Festival 2006 with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (The Philharmonia in the 9th). The Complete Beethoven Symphonies set is available for download and on CD, or you can download Symphony No 7 separately.

The Gramophone Awards 2012 was held at London’s Dorchester Hotel on 27 September 2012. Two Hyperion discs won their categories: Iestyn Davies singing Arias for Gaetano Guadagni (including works by Handel, Hasse and Gluck), accompanied by Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen, in the Recital category, and Herbert Howells’s Requiem & other works in the Choral category, performed by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, under their director of music Stephen Layton, which was described as ‘a perfect disc of its kind'. » Read more about it on the Gramophone website.

Hyperion wins 2010 Gramophone Recording of the Year

On Friday 1 October at the 2010 Gramophone Awards, we were delighted, and surprised, to discover that the final volume of The Cardinall’s Musick Byrd Edition, ‘Infelix ego’ , not only won the Early Music Award but was voted ‘Recording of the Year’. This is only the second time in the history of the awards that a recording of Early Music has won this highest accolade. It is Hyperion’s fourth ‘Recording of the Year’ and a great bonus for our 30th Anniversary celebrations!
